Robert W. Stewart
Robert W. Stewart, 87, of Clementon, NJ, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, June 21, 2021.
Robert was born in February of 1934, in his home in Clementon, NJ, the youngest child of May M. and George N. Stewart. Robert was brother to Georgie who passed away before Robert was born.
He graduated in 1952 from Lower Camden County High School and attended Glassboro State College where he received an Associate Degree and the National Institute for Automotive Excellence Service.
Robert married Phyllis J. (deceased) in April of 1957 and was survived by his loving daughters, Denise L. Hoopes and Sherrie L. Collings; grandsons, Patrick Hoopes Sr. and Matthew Hoopes; Great Grandson, Patrick Hoopes Jr.; extended family members, Nuno Chao, Krystyn Olivo, Christian, Roman, and Carter Trussell; his loving dogs, Precious and Lilly; and parrot, Pretty Girl.
Robert worked as a lifeguard in Atlantic City, he also performed many diving exhibitions and performed in the diving horse show as a diving clown. He also worked as a lifeguard at Clementon Lake Park, Lake Worth, Pilling Lake, and worked at the Pine Valley Golf Club. He also taught diving at the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in Blackwood, NJ.
He was a photographer for the roller derby. He took photographs of motocross events and wrote articles for Cycle News magazine.
He was an auto mechanic for 50+ years and he was an auto mechanic teacher at Camden County Vocational Technical School (CCVTS) in Sicklerville, NJ where he was well respected by the students and still received visits by some of them at his home and was proud to call them friends.
He built and owned a race car that he raced at Atco Speedway. He loved woodworking, traveling in his motor home, working in his garage, banjo playing, and was an avid science fiction reader.
Robert proudly served in the US Army in Vietnam and was part of the elite Special Forces. He was a Staff Sargent at Fort Dix, NJ, and Fort Devins, MA.
He also had ties in the community at Clementon Bible Baptist Church as an Ordained Minister where he was welcomed as an Associate Pastor.
Robert’s final wishes were to be home with his family when passing and to be cremated with as little fan fair as possible; all his final wishes have been fulfilled.
The family is planning a memorial celebration of his life for his family and friends. The date, place, and time will be announced at their earliest convenience. Robert’s family welcomes donations as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers to Clementon Elementary School, c/o Denise Hoopes, 300 Berlin Road, Clementon, NJ 08021.
