John N. Culbertson Sr.

John (Jack) Newell Culbertson Sr. of Barrington, New Jersey, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday , March 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 90 years old.

Jack was hard-working, compassionate, and was an example of selfless, Christ-like love. He was a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His steadfast Christian faith was known and admired by many.

A life long Barrington resident, Jack was born to William and Amy Culbertson on October 1, 1933. After graduating from Haddon Heights High School, he enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War, where he was able to study his passion – meteorology – at Lakehurst Naval Air Station and then served at a naval base in Key West, Florida. He continued his education at Montclair State College and later received his Master’s from Rider University. He was the first member of his family to go to college. For 32 years, Jack taught Business and Accounting, and was a dedicated baseball coach, at Gateway High School.

He was married to the love of his life, Donna, for over 58 years and together they had three children. He and his family were active members at Grace Bible Church in Barrington for many years, first attending when he was only two years old. He served in leadership positions in the church for many years and was also a dedicated board member of the Saints Prison Ministry.

Jack loved attending local high school sports (especially baseball and basketball) and cheering on his children and grandchildren when they played on their numerous South Jersey teams. He loved to play sports himself and was a member of the fast-pitch softball team at Barrington Methodist Church for many years. He was also a passionate fisherman, spending many wonderful summers in Ocean City, NJ. He was the proud owner of many dogs through the years and was the most loyal fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends, especially over a good meal from Ponzio’s Diner or the Bread Board.

Jack was the loving husband of the late Donna Culbertson [nee Palmiter] and the dear brother of late William Culbertson. He is survived by his children, Linda Costolo (wed to Jerry Costolo), John Culbertson (wed to Donna Culbertson), and Janet Mennig (wed to John Mennig); his grandchildren, Meredith (wed to David), Matthew (wed to Elisabeth), Hannah (wed to Jacob), Lauren (wed to Jarwei), Sara, Jake, Emily, Annie, Emma, and William; and great-grandchildren, Olivia, Everett, Kye, Naya, Ruth, Cora, and Miles.
